Do I need a hire car in the Algarve to get around?
It really depends what sort of holiday you are after. It is always convenient to have a car and there are some fantastic places to visit in the Algarve, other parts of Portugal and even Spain. You can book to go on trips but if you are planning on doing a couple, it would probably be cheaper and more convenient to have a car. Also, if you wish to eat away from the resorts in the evenings (which is probably cheaper) it would also be a good idea to have a car.
How much should I expect to pay for a hire car for a week?
A basic hire car for a week in peak season in the Algarve could be anything between £250 and £400. This would be for a typical 5 door car with air conditioning. We would recommend going through our agent as we know that they will be competitive. See our travel info page for details.
How far are the resorts from Faro airport?
It will take between 30 and 45 minutes to get to the resorts by car from Faro airport. The road is very good and is motorway the majority of the way.
How much should I be looking at paying for flights?
You would expect to pay around £250 return for a flight at this time of year although you can get cheaper deals if you shop around and are prepared to travel from different places. The time of travel is also a factor. If you are prepared to travel early morning or late at night the flights are cheaper.
Can you drink tap water in the Algarve?
No, it is important to buy bottled water so there is no risk of illness.
Is eating out expensive in the Algarve?
Like anywhere, it depends where you go. You can generally get a really nice 2 course meal with a drink for between £15 and £20 per person. It would be good advice to eat outside of the resorts as you will pay escalated prices there.
What food is good to eat in the Algarve?
Seafood is generally fresh and very good. Sardines are always associated with the Algarve and are excellent – particularly grilled. There are some speciality meat dishes as well including chicken piri piri and ‘Portuguese style steak’ which you must try while in the Algarve. Pork is also excellent. If you do not wish to eat Portuguese style cuisine, there are many Chinese, Italian and Indian restaurants not too far away from the resorts in nearby Armacao de Pera, Albufeira and Carvoeiro. Also, if the kids can’t resist a McDonalds there is one in Albufeira!
How hot is it in the Algarve at this time of year?
Temperatures in the Algarve at this time of year will be between 25 and 35 degrees centigrade and occasionally higher. It is unusual to get any rain or for the temperature to drop significantly. There is a lovely breeze that is associated with this region which makes the heat more manageable.
